The vehicle is inspected, you sign the contract and hand over the keys and V5C, and you are paid on collection.

The collection company

Gives you the valuation, arranges free collection, completes the contract with you on the day and pays you on collection.

You, the registered keeper

Hand over the V5C and keys, and tell DVLA the vehicle has gone to an authorised treatment facility.

What affects your car's value

Each car is valued individually by the collection company, based on the details you give. The main factors are:

the make, model and age, and the type of vehicle;
its weight and the parts that can be reused;
whether it runs, and any damage;
any missing parts.

The valuation is subject to contract. It can change if the vehicle does not match its description when it is inspected on collection. See Scrap Car Prices.

Free car collection

Collection is free and is arranged by the collection company once you accept its valuation. Cars that do not run and damaged cars can be collected on a recovery vehicle. Tell us about access, and whether the car rolls and steers, so the right vehicle is sent. See free scrap car collection.

Paperwork and DVLA

Have the V5C log book, if you have it, and photo ID ready. You keep the V5C's yellow section.
You must tell DVLA that the vehicle has gone to an authorised treatment facility. GOV.UK says you can be fined £1,000 if you do not (how to scrap your vehicle).
If the car is completely scrapped at an authorised treatment facility, you receive a Certificate of Destruction within 7 days.

Scrapped the right way

A car that is scrapped has to go to an authorised treatment facility, which depollutes it before parts and materials are reused or recycled. See car recycling and the environment.

Common questions

Is collection free?: Yes. Collection is arranged by the collection company covering your area once you accept its valuation. See free scrap car collection.
Can I scrap a car without an MOT?: Yes. A valid MOT is not needed for collection, but keep the car off the road until it is collected. See MOT failure cars.
Can a car that does not run be collected?: Yes. It is loaded onto a recovery vehicle. Say whether it rolls and steers when you enquire. See non-running cars.
Who pays me, and how?: The collection company pays you on collection, in line with the terms you agree. Where a vehicle is being scrapped in England or Wales, payment cannot legally be made in cash. Payment is made using an appropriate traceable method such as bank transfer.
Who tells DVLA?: You do, as the registered keeper. You must tell DVLA the vehicle has gone to an authorised treatment facility. See how it works: paperwork.
What is a Certificate of Destruction?: Proof that a vehicle was handed over for scrap. You receive one if the car is completely scrapped at an authorised treatment facility, but not if it is repaired and sold instead.
